Turn-based Role-playing game
In this sort of game, the player acts as a saviour, often operating within a medieval scenario and dealing with a world beset by all kinds of adversity. Players are afforded the opportunity to play the hero within a storyline which may be more or less long-winded. The mostly Far Eastern originating titles of this genre are usually referred to as “turn based”. Enemies and friendly units take turns on a rotating basis. The story is epic and from a “Western” point of view occasionally somewhat corny and lengthy. The hero or hero party has to confront evil, develop new skills during the unfolding of the story and acquire steadily better equipment.
The wide range of tasks, stories and graphical presentations involved with this genre means that it includes games from all age rating categorisations. The realisations on mobile consoles with smaller displays can sometimes lead to a lower classification.
Action-oriented Role-playing game
In this sort of game, the player acts as a saviour, often operating within a medieval scenario and dealing with a world beset by all kinds of adversity. Players are afforded the opportunity to play the hero within a storyline which may be more or less long-winded. “Action-oriented” represents the “Western” approach of Role-playing games. Enemies and friendly units attack in real time and build an action-packed and realistic battle portrayal. The storyline is likely to be more sinister and “adult”, while moral decisions are demanded by the player. Dialogues with computer controlled characters must be conducted as well, while various tasks result in new weapons or abilities for the hero.
The main percentage of these games are approved for children aged 12 and up, but there are lower and higher ratings as well: platform, graphical realisation of the specific storyline and the action sequences are to be considered.
Online Role-playing game (MMORPG)
Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game (MMORPG) – hidden behind that definition is the shared game experience of millions of players taking the role of their avatar and mostly organized in gildes. The build-up of the game is similar to the Action-oriented Role-playing game, but instead for computer controlled characters all teammates are human players taking part in destroying the threats. Even though the main principle is very much action centered, the collecting of items and the communication within the gild in order to achieve the respective goals are the main focus of these games.
The main percentage of these games are approved for children aged 12 and up. This age group is deemed capable of dismantling the game as obvious fiction. The design of gameplay elements allows a dissociation of emotional anxiety and overexcitation for 12-year old children.
